Award-winning writer and artist Thi Bui discusses her bestselling, debut graphic novel The Best We Could Do. Exploring the anguish of displacement and the lasting effects it has on a child and her family, The Best We Could Do documents the story of her family's daring escape after the fall of South Vietnam in the 1970s, the difficulties they faced building new lives for themselves, and her own journey as a new parent. Bui will also discuss her recent political comics work focusing on the deportation and mistreatment of refugees by the U.S. (as seen on The Nib and Pen America). Attendees will also get a sneak peek at her upcoming projects, including a graphic novel on climate change in Vietnam.
