Goldman for the first of three interactive and informative Comic Book Law School programs. This first program focuses on the basics of intellectual property rights available to creators and business owners, and it will provide attendees with the foundation needed for understanding which rights are available to creators of comics, games, films, and other creative works. It will also provide insights on how best to safeguard ideas, creative works, characters, brands, and names/titles from genesis through publication and distribution, and beyond. Attendees are invited to participate in an interactive discussion about the rights provided under U.S. copyright and trademark laws, including a discussion on the protections these laws provide, the benefits of federal registrations for each, tips on working with collaborators, and issues of joint authorship and work-made-for-hire. This year's program will also include a discussion Super Hero Haute Couture, including the interplay of comic book and sci-fi costumes, cosplay, and fair use. Afrofuturism is a Black aesthetic, philosophical, and artistic movement that dates to the mid-20th century; its influences can be seen most recently in Ryan Coogler's depiction of Wakanda, a place of super science, spiritual communion, and geopolitical influence predicated not on closeness to colonial nodes of power, but autonomy from them. This panel digs deep into the cultural archive of Afrofuturism to connect the broad audience of popular films like Black Panther to historical resources related to Afrofuturism, especially the work of Octavia Butler. Using records related to Butler's works of fiction and her life in Southern California, this panel uses zine making as a bridge between scholarly and popular archives, between the study of technology and Afrofuturism, and between LIS professionals and broader audiences. Participants will learn to use zines for audience engagement and will gain exposures to an abbreviated history of Afrofuturism in Southern California. Kubrick's Academy Award-winning achievement is a compelling drama of man vs. machine, a stunning meld of music and motion. Kubrick (who co-wrote the screenplay with Clarke) first visits our prehistoric ape-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever) into colonized space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted space, perhaps even into immortality. For the first time since its original release, new 70mm prints were struck from pristine printing elements made from the original camera negative. A longtime admirer of the late American auteur, Christopher Nolan worked closely with the team at Warner Bros. Pictures throughout the mastering process. Building on the work done for the new 70mm prints, the 4K UHD with HDR presentation was mastered from the 65mm original camera negative. The stars of the film— Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood—and an impressive array of scholars give attendees a glimpse at the remastered footage and a lively discussion of this landmark film. Telling a story through comics, animation, and film can be a fun but challenging business. Elvin A. Hernandez explores the ways that visual storytellers use design, composition, and layout to tell dynamic stories with dynamic visuals. He connects the use of the three-act structure of classic scriptwriting to allow for visual cues that can aid in the construction of exciting comics, animation, and illustration techniques.

Panelists will include Ruth Goldschmiedova Sax (who survived three concentration camps between the ages of 13 and 17, including Auschwitz), Sandra Scheller (daughter and award-winning author of Try to Remember: Never Forget, a book describing her mother's holocaust experiences), Robert Scott (owner of Comickaze Comics, San Diego), and Esther Finder (president and founder of Generations of the Shoah-an organization based in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors). Many think of the artist and the writer as the masterminds behind all great comics. Little do many know how much credit should go to the colorists, inkers, and letterers who put in hours of work, only to receive minimal recognition. Jessica Tseang (founder of The Comic Book Girl, comic book historian) leads a discussion with legendary talents from Marvel, DC, IDW, Dark Horse, Image, Top Cow, Aspen, and other publishers on how the industry can change, the importance of their work, a brief look into their daily lives, and how to break into their career. There will also be a Q&A for budding colorists, inkers, and letterers.
Academic libraries have often used scholarship and curriculum support as means to justify collecting comics and graphic novels. However, these items often get lost in the greater academic collections, and these "hidden" collections often go unused. Three academic librarians have taken a different approach to utilizing graphic novels and comics as means for community engagement and to encourage a culture of reading. Topics covered include developing a social justice-themed comic collection and a physical space in the library for comics and graphics novels, encouraging a comic culture to underserved populations, and strategies for outreach and engagement using comics and graphic novels. Panelists are Kai Alexis Smith (subject librarian, Cal Poly Pomona), Bethany Herman (public services librarian, Houston Community College), and Jennifer Crispin (public services librarian, Houston Community College).

In late 2017, Los Angeles Publicist Roger Neal launched the idea of having a salute to the 1966 "Batman" TV series featured at the legendary Hollywood Museum in the old Max Factor building in downtown Hollywood. With museum owner Donelle Dadigan's blessing, Roger and his client Burt Ward (Robin from the TV series) contacted Batman super collector Wally Wingert to curate the exhibit. Wingert engaged 20-plus Bat collectors from all over the country to participate in the exhibit, which opened on January 12 (the 52nd anniversary of the TV show's debut), much to the delight of fans everywhere. Wally, Donelle, and Roger will show photos and video and talk about the complicated process required to mount such an ambitious presentation. Along with two of the participating collectors (Scott Sebring and Pat Evans) and moderator Mark Fullerton, the audience will hear how the whole thing came together in glittering Hollywood fashion. Comics are moving away from the dichotomy of the damsel-in-distress and warrior princess to depict complicated and compelling female characters who are not defined by their body-type alone Writers LaToya Morgan (Turn, Into the Badlands) and Victoria Rau (Peek-A-Boo), artist Sam Sawyer (Lady Death), comic store owner Jen King (Eisner finalist), owner/creator of Zenescope Entertainment Ralph Tedesco, and cosplayer Fatal Siren will take a look at female representation, going beyond the cover art to explore the history of popular female characters, the current climate of the industry, the balance of gender on and off the page, as well as fan concerns about the future of women in comics.
Jessica Tseang (Girl on Geek, comic book historian) picks the brains of linguistic professors, actors, comic book legends, and film critics on the fascination with learning Kryptonian, Gallifreyan, Elvish, Dothraki, and Klingon. Dean Amstutz (ISG membership liaison) will discuss the membership journey, from initial interest through final approval. Kevin Weir (Imperial Surplus Armor and KW Designs owner) will relate his process for working with armor parts. Howard Smart (ISG member) will speak about small prop and soft costume construction. Sean Fields (Star Garrison member) will discuss 3D modeling and printing. Todd Mullin (ISG commanding officer) will moderate the panel and a Q&A session after the presentation.
